Witch Road delivers 43 new affordable homes for East Ayrshire Council on a prominent gateway site to the north of Kilmarnock town centre. Part of the Council’s Future Homes programme, the development replaces former flatted blocks with a low-rise neighbourhood designed around the needs of older residents and people with varying mobility and support requirements.
Single-storey terraces define the edge of Witch Road and are arranged around a series of shared gardens and amenity spaces. A south-facing ‘village green’ provides a focal point for the wider community, while a more sheltered residents’ garden creates a quieter space at the heart of the development.
The homes are designed to support changing needs over time, including dedicated wheelchair accommodation and features developed in collaboration with the Council’s inclusive design and social care teams. Colour is used carefully across entrances and external details to support wayfinding for residents with dementia and other cognitive conditions.
A restrained palette of buff and grey brick is enlivened by coloured cladding and timber entrance features, while a distinctive saw-tooth roofscape gives the development a strong identity within its elevated setting.
Together, the homes and landscape create a welcoming, non-clinical environment that supports independence, social interaction and a strong sense of community.
