Harhill Street

Harhill Street developed from an earlier feasibility study by MAST exploring the potential of a prominent brownfield site in central Govan. Working with Elderpark Housing Association, the brief placed design quality, housing choice and improvements to the public realm at the centre of the project.

Built on the former site of local swimming baths and the Gladstone Memorial Institute, the development provides 109 homes across a mix of tenures and housing types. These include family houses, cottage flats and contemporary three and four-storey flatted blocks, with homes for sale, affordable rent and shared equity alongside amenity and wheelchair accommodation.

The varied housing mix is brought together within a coherent masterplan that responds to the surrounding streets while creating a series of more intimate internal spaces. Terraced housing reinforces the established residential character, while taller flatted elements define key corners and provide focal points within the development.

Landscape and public realm were considered as integral parts of the scheme from the outset. The arrangement of buildings, streets and shared spaces was developed to improve connections through the site and create a pedestrian-friendly residential environment, complemented by a series of public realm enhancements developed in collaboration with artists.

Delivered as part of the wider regeneration of Central Govan, Harhill Street brought a long-vacant site back into use while introducing a genuinely mixed residential community. Its design quality was recognised at the 2011 Herald Property Awards, where the development won Best Apartment and received a Commendation for Social Development of the Year.
