Located on a key route into Kirkintilloch town centre, the redevelopment of East Dunbartonshire Council’s former headquarters has transformed a vacant brownfield site into 87 new mixed-tenure homes.
The development provides a mix of flats and houses for affordable rent and shared equity, with 20% of homes designed to support wheelchair users, older residents and people with additional mobility needs.
A key part of the design was reconnecting the site with Kirkintilloch’s wider green and active travel network, including the Forth & Clyde Canal and Strathkelvin Railway Path. New routes through the development improve permeability and accessibility while creating opportunities to integrate landscape, drainage and biodiversity within the wider masterplan.
The neighbourhood is organised around three distinct character areas, The Meadow, The Avenue and The Crossing. Together they create a varied sequence of streets and public spaces, combining planting, play and sustainable drainage features to give each part of the development its own identity.
A consistent palette of light brick and metal cladding brings cohesion across the site, while generous windows and Juliet balconies create a simple, contemporary architectural language. Along the surrounding streets, the buildings reinforce the existing urban edge and establish a strong gateway presence on one of the principal approaches into Kirkintilloch.
