Nethan Street

MAST has worked extensively across Govan for more than 40 years, and Nethan Street continues our contribution to the area’s regeneration.  The development provides 82 new homes for Elderpark Housing on a prominent site that had remained vacant since the 1960s, complementing our nearby conversion of the former Hills Trust School and flatted development at Langlands Road (which sits directly opposite).

A sweeping curved frontage and highly visible location called for a strong urban response.  A primary flatted block follows the northern and eastern edges of the site, rising from three to five storeys and enclosing lower-scale cottage flats and family homes within.  New pedestrian connections improve movement through this new neighbourhood, linking directly with an existing cycle route and footpath along the western boundary.

Within the site, landscaped courtyards create shared amenity at the heart of the development, introducing planting, colour and character while softening the relationship between buildings, streets and parking areas.

The architecture of the development draws on familiar local forms, whilst giving the development a clear identity of its own.  A multi-tonal buff brick unifies the flatted accommodation and terraced homes, articulated through a sequence of recessed and projecting bays.  On the flatted block, reflective copper cladding defines upper floors and close entrances, creating a distinctive urban presence along the main frontages.  On the south-facing courtyard elevations, sunspace pods provide additional private amenity for residents while taking advantage of solar gain and views across the landscape spaces below.
