MAST have worked with North Lanarkshire Council on a series of studies exploring the long-term regeneration of Cumbernauld Town Centre. The work considers how the existing 1960s megastructure could be reconfigured around a more diverse, accessible and connected urban centre.
The initial feasibility study tested alternative masterplan approaches, including the future of Central Way, a new Town Hub, commercial and retail development, town centre living, landscape and improved walking, cycling and public transport connections. The proposals sought to bring education, health, leisure, community and commercial uses closer together around a clearer pattern of streets and public spaces.
Further studies have developed key parts of this strategy. At the former Fleming House site, MAST examined options for a new transport hub combining bus and taxi facilities with retail and commercial uses. We have also explored a Modular Village of 46 commercial units, intended to accommodate businesses displaced during phased demolition while providing adaptable space for new occupiers. The study investigated the use of steel-framed modular construction as a flexible framework for changing operator requirements.
Together, these studies present bold visions for the future of Cumbernauld’s centre and highlight the practical challenges required to realise them.
