Completion Date: 2025
The Ardrossan Community Development Trust had developed a wider masterplan outlining a series of improvements along the beachfront in Ardrossan, North Ayrshire. MAST were appointed by the ACDT to lead on the design and delivery of a new amenity building which would act as an anchor development for the wider regeneration programme.
The project originally centred on the conversion and extension of a former public toilet block, evolving into a purpose-built facility which allowed the client to maximise their service offering. The building combines a café and beach rental kiosk with accessible WC provision (including a Changing Places facility) and secure cycle parking. Alongside the main building a series of beach huts were introduced, intended for rental by artists and stallholders.
The building is conceived as a robust and functional piece of architecture comprising two linked volumes finished in a weatherboard cladding, its relatively low scale helping to address the impacts of its exposed coastal location. Since completion it has proven to be a popular addition to the seafront, now serving as the centrepoint of a variety of additional leisure uses.
